Preserved Orange
When in the season we have an abundance of fruits and vegetables. But when it is oversupplied and the price is low, I think we have to figure out what to do if you happen to be overstocked. A simple solution is to preserve them. Fermenting is an ancient technique that has been proven to be working whether using salt, sugar, spices or all in combination. Today I will show you a simple way to preserve oranges in syrup. To extend its life span and can be used in various cooking recipes such as orange cake, decorating, garnishing or additive ingredients.
Ingredients
2-4 Navel oranges
2 cups raw sugar
1 tbsp raw honey
A pinch of salt
How to make
Slice oranges into thin slices and place in a pot. Cover with water and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes.
Drain the orange slices and rinse them with cold water.
In a separate pot, combine sugar, honey, and a pinch of salt with 2 cups of water. Stir over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved.
Add the orange slices to the pot of syrup and bring to a simmer. Cook for an additional 10 minutes, or until the orange slices are translucent and the syrup has thickened.
Remove the pot from heat and let it cool down to room temperature.
Once cooled, place the orange slices and syrup in a sealed container or jar and store in the refrigerator. The orange slices will keep for up to 2 months in the fridge.
